Back in June of this past year, I had the opportunity to shoot Susan Corbett, the wife of Pennsylvania governor Tom Corbett at the Governor’s mansion in Harrisburg Pa. The shoot was a fashion shoot for Philly Style magazine. The governor’s mansion is beautiful and to someone like me, who is obsessed with both architecture and history, it was tough to fight the impulse to shoot every detail of every room in the mansion. As we looked around the mansion, the staff indulged my taste for all things historical by explaining when certain pieces of furniture or art were added to the mansion and the circumstances surrounding their arrival. One room had a floor-to-ceiling mural painted on all four walls which was incredibly intricate. Unfortunately, we couldn’t shoot in the room because they rarely open the shades as sunlight has started to damage the painting and I’d hate to think what our strobes might do. Our mission however, was not to shoot interiors, but rather Mrs. Corbett showing off some stunning outfits designed by Richard Andries. Richard and his wife Theresa were there to help advise on the best look for the scenes I chose. As with most shoots where the subject is an executive portrait, corporate portrait, or political portrait, we had a limited time to work. Despite the time crunch, Susan was very friendly and a consummate professional, with nary a complaint about the many changes of wardrobe. She let us shoot for longer than we had planned (which almost never happens). Because she was so generous with her time, we were able to capture a plethora of great images of Mrs. Corbett showing off her beautiful style as well as the quaint gardens and expansive interiors of the mansion. Philly Style ran the article in their fall fashion guide in October.
