Back in January, I was asked to shoot producer and bass player Adam Blackstone for the cover of Bass Player Magazine’s March issue. Adam is both an awesome bass player and accomplished producer who’s had his hand in dozens of albums over the last ten years. In the studio, he’s played with or produced artists such as The Roots, Jill Scott, Demi Lovato, and Al Jarreau among dozens of others. You may also recognize Adam from the first season of NBC’s The Voice, when he paired with Adam Levine (of Maroon Five) to help their contestant Javier Colon win first place.
Adam is originally from the Philadelphia area and went to Willingboro High School in New Jersey. We actually were in high school at the same time and I often got to see Adam play when our jazz bands would perform with each other at local competitions. Even at seventeen you could tell that Adam was super-talented and he nurtured that talent into a career that most musicians only dream of. We decided to set up the shoot at Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia which has been one of the few studios that has managed to thrive throughout the various changes of the Philly music scene. When working in Philly, Adam spends much of his time at Sigma and since he’s so comfortable there, it was the perfect location to capture some great portraits of Adam showing of his different basses as well as some candid shots of him relaxed and playing in the studio. Below is the cover and a few of the pages from Bass Player Magazine as well as a few of my favorite images from the shoot.
